Plastic Surgery in Canada

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 8:18 pm

Canadians who are seeking cosmetic procedures often wonder if these procedures are safe. While Canada has a rich history of great plastic surgeons, this type of voluntary surgery always brings questions. If you are considering having a procedure done in Canada, here is some important information you should know.

History of Canadian Plastic Surgery

Canadian plastic surgery has a rich history dating back to before World War I. Dr. E. Fulton Risdon was practicing plastic surgery in the early 1900s, an era when physicians rarely specialized. He was invited by Harold D. Gillies to join a war effort to offer plastic surgery to maimed soldiers. When the war was over Dr. Risdon returned to Toronto and the Toronto Western Hospital where he continued to practice cosmetic surgery almost exclusively. Many people consider him the father of Canadian plastic surgery.

Dr. Risdon was Toronto’s first plastic surgeon, and he solidified the study of the specialty at the University of Toronto, where he practiced for 45 years. By 1958 the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University had been established, giving physicians a place to go to be educated in the specialty. Today, the University of Toronto as well as McGill University in Montreal both lead the field of Canadian plastic surgery, focusing on improving techniques and utilizing new technologies to make procedures more effective and affordable.

Is Canadian Plastic Surgery Safe?

As with plastic surgery in almost any country, there are dangers involved with having plastic surgery performed in Canada. For instance, you can find doctors who are not board certified that are practicing cosmetic procedures. These physicians do not have the experience and education necessary to perform complicated procedures, and patients are often left with less-than-desirable results after having surgery with an under-qualified doctor.

To keep this from being a problem, look for a doctor who is certified as a cosmetic surgeon by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. You can also contact the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeon or the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery to find out if the physician you are considering is qualified.

Another way to ensure that the procedure you will be receiving is safe and monitored is to look for a doctor that performs at a center that is accredited by the Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. This organization is made up of certified plastic surgeons who have chosen to allow their fellow plastic surgeons to inspect their surgery centers. If you are having surgery in a non-hospital setting, look for this qualification.

Will My Healthcare Coverage Pay for Canadian Plastic Surgery?

Patients who wish to undergo Canadian plastic surgery procedures need to know that there is a good chance the surgery will not be covered by their medical coverage, whether they have government healthcare or private healthcare. Most plastic surgery procedures that are cosmetic in nature are not covered by healthcare coverage plans. These are considered optional surgeries and are, therefore, the responsibility of the patient to fund.

There is an exception to this, however. Some plastic surgery procedures, such as skin grafts after a fire or surgeries to fix a cleft palate, are considered medically necessary. Medically necessary procedures are usually covered if the patient has the necessary referrals from a regular physician.

If your medical coverage will not cover a procedure, yet you still wish to have it done, you may be able to find a clinic or doctor that has a payment plan structure in place that will allow you to pay for the procedure over time. Some physicians require upfront payment, so you will have to find outside financing. Regardless of how you choose to pay the bill, you need to be aware of the fact that you will probably have to pay for some of the surgery, if not all of it, out of your own pocket, so you will need to decide if the cost is worth the potential benefit.

Brampton Cosmetic Surgery Toronto is fully accredited by the Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (CAAASF), which means it has the same surgery standards as a hospital.

Breast Augmentation Surgery With A Breast Lift

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 7:45 pm

Breast enhancement or augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures in the United States today. It can dramatically improve the appearance of a woman’s breasts. This procedure is used to enlarge small or underdeveloped breasts. A lift procedure could be added in cases where volume loss and ptosis occurs (following pregnancy and delivery).

The following information was assembled for our patients to help them make a well informed decision about their surgery.

It is of paramount importance to discuss all your goals and expectations with your surgeon. Your breast shape, diameter, degree of ptosis, symmetry etc. will be assessed during the consultation. The following important points should be addressed by your surgeon:

1-Implant size that would fit your body.
2-Different incisions to access your breast.
3-Types of implants available.
4-Location of the implant.
5-Post-operative course and down time.
6-Effect of surgery on nipple sensation and future nursing.
7-Safety and adverse effects of the procedure.

Finally your consultation will proceed into trying different implants, reviewing different pre and post operative results as well as taking pictures and performing a digital analysis of your own chest and breast shapes.

Breast augmentation mammoplasty is a safe procedure that has produced pleasing and satisfying results for many women. Those who are psychologically stable and have realistic expectations benefit the most. A preliminary consultation can help you determine whether breast augmentation is right for you.

The decision to have a Breast reduction or lift procedure could be a life affirming one. Whether it is done for neck pain, shoulder pain, inability to engage in many physical activities or just for cosmetic reasons, both procedures are associated with high patients satisfaction. Most women who pursue breast reduction consider the procedure for many years before having surgery, and they often wonder why they waited so long to undergo such a life changing operation.

Extremely large or droopy breasts may be the result of excessive development or the aging process. Such changes most frequently occur for hereditary reasons during menarche, pregnancy or following menopause; or at any time during a woman’s life as a result of weight gain.

Extremely large or droopy breasts may be the result of excessive development or the aging process. Such changes most frequently occur for hereditary reasons during menarche, pregnancy or following menopause; or at any time during a woman’s life as a result of weight gain.

Although the goals of breast reduction and breast uplift procedures are different, the pre-operative preparation, surgical incision, and postoperative course are quite similar. In both procedures, incisions are designed to create a more youthful and natural shaped breast. In both procedures, this involves elevating the nipple/areola complex to a more natural position on the center of the breast mound.

During your consultation, your plastic surgeon will access the degree of breast ptosis, skin quality, nipple location, etc. Different techniques and incisions will be presented to you. Pre and post operative of some of our patients will be reviewed. Finally your surgeon will discuss risks, alternatives and post-operative recovery.

Breast reduction/breast lift is highly technical procedure that is associated with high patient satisfaction. A prerequisite for a good outcome is a well informed realistic patient together with a well qualified surgeon.

Tummy Tucks Can Help With Stretch Marks And Provide A Tighter Stomach

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 4:15 pm

Large weight gains (with or without subsequent loss), pregnancies, hereditary factors, hormonal influences, previous operations with hernia formation and stretching are all factors that contribute to unattractive stomachs, thighs and buttocks.

In cases where a large amount of excess skin is present in the form of folds, liposuction alone will not give satisfactory results. The excessive skin must be removed along an incision which is usually located within a bathing suit line at the level of a crease. Stretch marks may be improved, but can never be entirely eliminated.

Some of the above noted conditions (surgeries such as Cesarean sections, pregnancy related weight gain, for instance) not only stretch the abdomen, but can also result in ruptures or hernias. In addition, the fat-containing organ inside the abdomen (called the omentum) can become enlarged, adding to the protuberance.

Although weight control through diet and exercise is most important, many structural changes cannot be corrected through any method other than surgery. Stretching and widening of the diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles); abdominal hernias; scar retraction from previous surgery; isolated, unyielding collections of fatty tissue; and stretched, excess skin require surgery for satisfactory resolution.

Often the presence of these entities causes embarrassment and emotional distress. In addition,, physical problems such as pain, rashes under the skin folds, inability to wear supportive clothing, danger of further rupture during pregnancy, discomfort or the inability to perform exercise, etc., may be present.

Abdominal, thigh and buttocks procedures are usually performed separately for two reasons. First, few people require more than one type of surgery and second, these operations may vary from relatively simple skin tightening to extensive skin and hernia repairs. These procedures are performed under general anesthesia with the addition of a long-acting local anesthetic for postoperative comfort and are followed by several days of recovery care. Each of these operations consists of several steps. One or all may be performed in order to achieve the best results, with surgery lasting from one and one half to three hours.

Many patients now have an alternative to the classic tummy tuck - the modified tuck. With the modified procedure, a smaller incision is made in the abdomen than the traditional tuck. This incision often is compared in size to a C-section incision which heals with a bikini line scar. Even with the small incision, fat can still be removed, skin tightened and muscles sutured.

These surgeries are used to correct extensive tissue laxity or excesses. Whenever feasible, simpler means should be tried first. Additionally, the patient considering surgery should be in general good health and weight should be reasonable. The surgery is not a weight control measure though it may be helpful after a large amount of weight is lost and residual sagging skin remains. He or she should not smoke and should be on some type of exercise program. (Running or walking is recommended) The time and expense involved in recovery must also be considered.

Of greatest importance is the trade-off of excessive laxity and tissue for resultant scars which are rarely terrible, but never fully inconspicuous. Due to the location and the degree of tension of the incision line, a certain degree of scar fullness or thickness may result as well as numbness, itching and swelling. Most of these, however, resolve with time.

Are You In Need Of Orthodontistry Or Periodontistry Work?

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 4:00 pm

The initial contact with a dental office usually begins with a consultation with one of the general dentists. The goal of a cosmetic dentist is to meet with you to determine your needs and formulate a comprehensive plan to restore you to optimal health. Orthodontics and periodontics can help.

Orthodontic care refers to the movement of teeth. This dental specialty deals with problems of malocclusion (ill fitting teeth), problems with the temporalmandibular joint (TMJ), and cosmetic tooth correction.

Modern orthodontic treatment includes phase one care (the placement of removable appliances in patients age 6 through 12). This interceptive treatment is designed to take advantage of the rapid growth during this time and help correct the form and function of the dentition. This care can shorten and lessen the period required for the child to be in standard braces.

The introduction of the INVISALIGN tray system has revolutionized the care in adult patients. This system relies upon a series of trays to move the teeth and because no wires or brackets are used, patient acceptance has been excellent.

In patients with severe skeletal alignment problems, orthodontic treatment, in combination with surgery, may be required to achieve the best functional and cosmetic results.

Periodontics is the dental specialty that treats disease of the gums and surrounding bone. Standard periodontal care is arranged in phases.

Phase 1 Care includes examination and diagnosis of periodontal disease followed by root planing and soft tissue curettage. Many times this phase will utilize microbial testing and antimicrobial care… This care includes systemic antibiotics as well as antibacterial irrigation of the periodontium.

Phase 2 Care includes the reevaluation of the patient to determine the best course of care for the patient. This includes either placement on a maintenance program (cleanings every 3-4 months) versus periodontal surgical intervention.

Modern periodontal surgery includes surgery of the bone and soft tissues surrounding the teeth, soft tissue grafting, and bone grafting procedures to repair defects and placement of dental implants.

The continued maintenance of the periodontal tissues is critical to prevent the return of this disease process.

Endodontics is the dental specialty which treats infections and disease of the pulp of the tooth.

Modern endodontics relies upon microscopic removal of diseased tissue, shaping of the internal anatomy of the tooth and placement of inert sealants into the root canal… Because of advances in endodontics, most patients can retain teeth that would otherwise need to be removed.

A second area of endodontics, surgical endodontics, allows for treatment of the infected tooth when the standard approach is not possible.

Following endodontic care, most teeth will need a crown to help strengthen the tooth.

Buying a Diamond Engagement Ring? - Get What You Pay For

Monday 30 June 2008 @ 3:07 pm

It’s an important time in your life when you get engaged but don’t let emotion overwhelm your shopping savvy when you purchase a diamond engagement ring.

Diamonds are valued on:

Color - the purer and whiter the more valued Clarity - the transparency of the stone and any inclusions (visible flaws) Cut - how well cut the diamond is (not the shape) Carat - how much the diamond weighs

Color can be manipulated in several ways. The diamond is shown under a colored light that offsets any yellowness in the stone or is shown against a black cloth backdrop instead of white. The setting of the stone can influence the perception of the color. A white gold or platinum setting contrasts with a yellowish diamond making the yellow cast more obvious, while a yellow gold setting doesn’t make the yellow color as obvious. None of these methods are dishonest as long as the seller states the actual color grade.

However some dishonest sellers misstate the color grade intentionally or enhance it. Yellowish diamonds can be made to look whiter by touching the side of the diamond with indelible purple ink which neutralizes yellow. The diamond can also be painted to neutralize the yellow. The “paint” isn’t at all obvious, can’t be washed off and may take months of cleaning before it wears off.

All natural diamonds have some flaws. The diamond can be set to hide an obvious flaw on the edge of the diamond, the prong of the setting hiding the flaw. If you’re buying a one or more carat diamond in your engagement ring it should be examined unset. Diamonds can have a crack or fissure filled thereby concealing it. Sometimes an inclusion can be lasered out. These techniques are not unethical as long as the seller discloses they’ve been used.

The weight of the diamond is measured in carats and increases exponentially. In other words a two carat diamond with similar clarity, color, and cut, will cost much more than twice the price of a one carat diamond. Some diamonds are cut to leave a bit of unpolished area on the girdle to make sure the diamonds reaches that important one carat weight. A .95 carat diamond price per carat cost is much less than a 1.00 carat diamond price per carat cost.

A three carat diamond engagement ring can vary tremendously in value depending on how many diamonds make up the three carats. A two carat center stone offset by two 1/2 carat diamonds would be costlier than a ring with a one carat center stone offset by four 1/2 carat stones, even though both rings have three carats of diamonds.

Diamonds that are two carats don’t look twice as big as a one carat stone. The increase in perceived size is only about 50%. A word of warning: Be leery when someone says a diamond spreads 1.5 carats. That doesn’t mean it weighs 1.5 carats, just that it looks the same size as a 1.5 carat diamond when viewed from above. That can be achieved by cutting the diamond broader but shallower.

Cut is one of the more important factors. A badly cut diamond loses its brilliance and sparkle compared to a well cut diamond. A round brilliant cut diamond is about half the size of that same diamond in the rough, or uncut. Some diamond cutters will try to eke out two one carat stones out of a rough diamond crystal by sacrificing the quality of the cut.

The best way to know that you’re getting what you’re paying for when purchasing your UK diamond engagement ring is to purchase from a reliable dealer that provides a diamond grading report from an independent gemstone laboratory.

Basic Facts About Lip Augmentation

Sunday 29 June 2008 @ 10:17 am

Every time you look into the mirror, do you feel that your lips would have looked more sensuous and appealing if they were much enhanced and full? Or do you think that the lips have lost their original size and swell with the passage of time and spoiled the gorgeous look that you used to have? Then lip augmentation is probably the best way to make them look as good as before. This is a particular type of cosmetic procedure wherein some cosmetic filler is implanted inside the lips in order to increase their size. But at the same time this treatment can provide you with a temporary result as with the passage of time, the injected substance gets absorbed by the body and in order to maintain the desired look you need to get yourself regular sittings with the doctor.

Procedure of Lip Augmentation

There are several different fillers that are inserted into the lips in order to make them look fuller. The most frequently used ones are Collagen, fat and Restylane. The collagen is a typical protein that generally supports various body parts and commonly used in lip augmentation. The collagen used for this purpose is prepared from disinfected bovine collagen of the tissue. The other biodegradable as well as non-animal substance, widely used to enhance the size of the lips is Restylane. The procedure is quite short and simple that hardly takes half an hour to finish. You will not feel any pain as a local anaesthesia is performed before this. You just need to go for an allergy test before lip augmentation so that the right filler can be chosen for you.

Should You go for a Lip Augmentation?

If you are confused about the requirement of a lip augmentation for yourself then let me inform you that there are some factors that you need to consider before going for this cosmetic treatment. The benefits that you will surely get are that you will get a sumptuous look because of your lips. This will also add a balanced look to the other features of your face.
Moreover the overall improvement in appearance will surely boost up your confidence. At the same time there are certain demerits of this procedure. Collagen can cause severe allergic reactions wherein fat is sometimes responsible for infection. The other filler, Restylane can show up side effects like pain, redness or bruises. So be sure about your priorities before opting for a lip augmentation.

How Much will it Cost?

The general observations by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that a normal lip augmentation, excluding the expenses for fillers can cost you around $1400 wherein the fillers will come for another $400 approximately. Then again it all depends on the surgeon who is going to handle your case.

April Kerr writes for website Lip Augmentation VIP which goes into further details about lip augmentation surgery and collagen lip injections.

Sid Vicious Would Be So Proud

Sunday 29 June 2008 @ 1:15 am

Yes - punk clothing is back again! Back in the Seventies, punks were the latest rage. It was the young people’s way of being rebellious by finding the most outrageous way of dressing that they could. Old people were definitely shocked to see youngsters walking around with lurid coloured hair in gravity defying spikes. Bits were shaved from girls and boys and when it came to hairstyles, anything that drew attention was good.

As far as the definition between male and female went, there was none. The only way you could tell if you were speaking to a boy or girl was the tightness of the trousers and who wants to inspect that? Thus we now have a generation of older people who refer to every young person as ‘dear’ to make sure that don’t get it wrong.

Punk clothing fashions were for the tightest trousers you could possibly get away with which might well explain the drop in the population and the increase of men with a low sperm count. It also explains why punks were to be seen hanging around on street corners. Sitting was a physical impossibility in punk clothing. Not just for because of their tight trousers but also for the pins. Safety pins and spikes were to stick out of clothes at dangerous angles to emphasis the fact that you were a punk and not just a person who’s clothes were too small for them.

It wasn’t just punk clothing that demanded metal objects to protrude from it. It was also the body itself. Anything that dangled should be pierced. If the piercings were in close proximity, then they should be joined together with chains. I personally can’t see the problem with this. Many a time I have thought my kids should be chained and easily restrained but if I voiced this then they would do the opposite and become chavs and I just can’t do this to them.

Today, the punk clothing has made a bit of a comeback, albeit with less impact. In the Seventies it was new and vibrant and just a little bit dangerous to be seen as a punk. Since then, the generations have become increasingly daring with what they will do to draw attention, even harking back to the days where they looked like the man from C & A. Thankfully this didn’t last.

So, young people are punks once again. The hairstyles are extreme but not shocking like last time, the colours are still loud but so many people have gone down this route that I actually think it looks nice rather than shocking. Yes, I like to think of myself as one of the modern mums who encourage individualism - if that is possible with the anything goes view of today’s youth. However, I am not easily scared.

It is common knowledge today that if you don’t want your kids to do something outrageous, don’t argue with them, don’t ban them. Laugh, encourage them, they’ll soon stop it. Even though they know it’s reverse psychology it still confuses their little brains and it takes all the fun out of being rebellious. They should be happy. They’ve got what they always wanted.

Anything goes when it comes to fashion - goth, punk, emo or chav. Kids can dress how they want and unless they walk around in gimp masks with a leash, they are still able to get jobs, dressed in a way that my mum’s generation would have put you in an institution for.

Fashion expert Catherine Harvey looks at the way punk clothing has made a comeback.

Wonder Woman, The Pope And The Queen - The History Of Tiaras

Saturday 28 June 2008 @ 6:33 pm

One of the oldest items of adornment in the world is the tiara. The tiara has played a number of important roles in different social groups. Possibly the most famous of all tiaras is that worn by the pope. The tiara that is worn by the pope is called the Papal tiara and it refers to what is essentially a high cap that is worn at ceremonial occasions. The papal tiara tends to be associated with supreme authority and it is adorned with an image of the globe and a cross that is indicative of the Roman Catholic Church.

This tiara has not been seen in public for a number of years. The last time it was seen in public it was worn by Pope Paul the fourth. It has not been worn since the Second Vatican council. This was a series of sessions that took place between leading figures in the Roman Catholic Church where many of the theological issues that the church faced were discussed.

The tiara has however not been worn since and as a result the tiara has almost left the public conscience. The image of the tiara has even been removed from the coat of arms of the current Pope; Pope Benedict XVI. The current coat of arms includes an image of the more traditional headgear worn by bishops and abbots; a mitre.

The reason for this change is that the Pope is concerned that the tiara represents a role as a king or leader and the pope wanted to have a simpler image that instead referred to spiritual authority. Despite not being the most popular form of headwear for the Pope the tiara is still a very popular form of headwear in many other situations.

There is a long history in which tiaras have been used. Early tiaras were in the form of leather which was wrapped around the head and adorned with various different items such as bones, animal horns and feathers. These tiaras are generally a symbol of authority and represent the leader of the group. This level of authority is associated with that of a crown and the tiara has in recent rears become synonymous with female dignitaries.

The tiara these days is made out of metal and is almost a full circle of metal however the circle is not complete. The two ends of the curved metal nearly meet at the end and this section of the tiara is placed at the rear of the head. The front end of the tiara is typically covered in jewels and is raised above the simple band. These modern tiaras are also commonly worn as part of the bride’s wedding clothing.

One of the most famous fictional characters to wear a tiara is Wonder Woman. The comic book superhero wore a tiara when she was performing her role as a superhero and as a result the tiara can be seen as something very feminine and powerful. This was the type of character that the comic book creators had wanted. Someone that was both powerful and beautiful and as a result the tiara was chosen as the distinctive item of her costume.

Shaun Parker is an expert on jewellery and wedding tiaras. He offers his wealth of knowledge to help people with their purchases.

Bridal Jewelry - Eastern Bride and A Western One

Saturday 28 June 2008 @ 1:39 pm

The purpose of jewelry is the beautification and the personality enhancement of the wearer. And who needs it more than a bride? Be it an eastern bride or a western one, it has been awarded an extra special niche in the list of the most important wedding items. If the bridal dress is not coupled with the right kind of jewels, the bride’s total look will not come out. In western culture, the wedding gown is of white color. So, not much choice is left for the color matching issue. Usually, white jewelry is opted with precious gems and stones like diamonds or pearls. Gold is also being worn. But the preference is given to the white gold. It is not supposed to be heavy either.

Preference is given to the lighter one. It is there to compliment the white bridal gown. There are many designers who have specific designs for the wedding occasions. They have a whole catalog from where the brides can select their own designs. But they can also make amendments to suit their own choice of the metal and stones collection. In this way, a unique look is being rendered to the bridal jewelry.

But the eastern trends are some what different from the westerns ones. Especially in the sub continent, heavy jewelry is being preferred. Here, gold is the most sought after metal for this purpose. Wedding rings are the most important wedding ornament. Besides the main bridal set, wedding rings are paid extra attention. They are craftily designed. Different designs are there for the brides to choose. Diamond rings are generally preferred but it’s up to the bride to go for her favorite stone and design.

Bridal jewelry is wholly and solely dependent on the bride’s choice. There is no hard and fast rule to follow the contemporary trends only. It’s up to her whether she wants to wear a black pearl set or rubies studded gold set. It is totally her choice to make sure what suits her and what is supposed to match her wedding gown. There are many professional jewelry designers who can sort out her problem. They can let her know which stone would go with which particular metal. And what is supposed to be the specific look of the wedding set to go with the dress in order to enhance the total impact of her personality.
