What Chemicals Are Used In Mainstream Skincare Products That Can Cause Skin Irritation

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 12:22 pm

As organic skin care grows in popularity, people are starting to realize just how unhealthy mainstream make up, lotions and basic heath items are. With this awareness has come a mounting alarm that these products are not FDA regulated and manufacturers can get away with using a lot of additives that pharmaceutical companies cannot. As a result, potentially life threatening chemicals are being placed in everyday items like baby oil, lotions and creams putting consumers at risk.

Many of these items can create adverse skin reactions and rashes that turn men and women off from the use of these otherwise beneficial items.

Below is a list of some of the things you should look out for when purchasing regular skin care products that may cause irritation or be potentially toxic.

Parabens

Parabens are a collective group of preservatives that have been used by the cosmetic and beauty aid industry to reduce bacterial growth in their products. Many Parabens start with the prefix of methyl, ethyl, butyl, or propyl and are extremely hazardous to health as well as irritating to the skin.

Below is a list of some of these parabens as well as other toxic chemicals that can be aggravating to the largest organ of the human body as well as contribute to a host of ailments.

- Color and Fragrance – both of these substances do not provide anything other than an aesthetic or scent related effect, however, both have properties in them that create skin sensitivity. They are also carcinogenic, meaning that they could cause caner.

- DMDM Hydantoin. Another preservative, this chemical has been attributed to the releases of formaldehyde. This harmful byproduct not only causes skin irritation, it creates allergies and joint pain as well as a long list of hormonal problems.

- Triclosan. This chemical has been categorized by the EPA as a chlorophenol, a high level carcinogen. Just a tiny bit can create major health problems and wreak havoc on the body. The continued use of Triclosan has been linked to hormonal imbalances in both men and women.

- Propylene Glycol (PG) – petroleum based preservative this substance has been cited among the many numerous skin irritants in cosmetic and beauty products. It is also so toxic that handlers have to wear safety gear just to touch it.

- Butylene Glycol – also a petroleum based chemical, both butylene and propylene glycol is dangerous and extremely deadly and some cases. Butylene has been linked to cancer and numerous other chronic disorders.

- Mineral Oil – yet another petroleum product, mineral oil clogs pores creating aggravating break outs and rashes in many users. It also interferes with the skin’s ability to renew and repair itself. This can create a host of problems outside of mere acne issues as the skin needs to function properly for other important organs to work efficiently.

On an even scarier note, most baby oil is made up of 100% Mineral Oil!

There are hundreds more chemicals that can adversely affect the skin or cause illness — to find out what they are, you should do further, in depth research on the topic.

Other problems associated with mainstream skin care products

Continued use of over the counter, mainstream skin care products can contribute to hormonal imbalances, allergies, severe skin irritations leading to rashes and dermatitis, disorders like CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) headaches, depression, mood swings and hyperactivity.

The answer

Using organic all natural products can alleviate some of the risks commonly associated with the use of mainstream beauty products. Be careful in this regard as many manufacturers may claim something is all natural or organic yet have chemicals in them.

Read all skin care product labels and above all, strive to make sure that you replace harmful chemical based products in your home with truly organic purchases. Though a bit more time consumptive, you will be rewarded with a better health and more luxurious and thankful skin.

Offers professional organic skin care products to help you maintain a youthful appearance. Provides organic skincare products such as cleansers, toners and serums for all skin types.

Is Injectable Wrinkle Reduction Procedure Safe

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 11:50 am

As more and more people enter the market for effective anti-wrinkle treatments, some radical treatments have become increasingly popular, raising safety concerns. Many people are concerned that injectable wrinkle reduction procedures may not be safe, and may pose health and safety concerns for patients.

The most popular and widely known form of anti-wrinkle treatment that involves injection is Botox. Botox is a form of botulinum toxin, produced by a particular strain of bacteria that is lethal to humans when present in large amounts but in small amounts, causes muscle paralysis. Botox was originally designed to treat patients with severe muscle spasms, by paralyzing the muscles and making them unable to contract. It was discovered, however, that Botox is also effective in reducing wrinkles.

In most people, wrinkles are caused by certain facial expressions such as frowning, which crease the brow. As people age, these facial expressions cause the skin to crease and fold, and as the skin is no longer as elastic as it was previously, the folding slowly becomes permanent. Botox treatments involved injecting minute amounts of the toxin into the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, relaxing them and thus causing the wrinkles to disappear. There are, however, safety concerns surrounding the use of Botox to remove wrinkles.

The first is that Botox, being a toxin, has a high risk of causing allergic reactions in sensitive patients. Many patients who have multiple drug allergies have been found to have a negative reaction to the toxin in Botox, and some have suffered severe allergic reactions. There has even been a case where the death of a patient is thought to have been linked to the use of Botox, in higher concentrations than the recommended maximum dosage. This shows the potential danger inherent in the use of Botox.

Because Botox is administered by doctors and nurses, there is always the chance of human error. If too much Botox is accidentally administered, then the patient may suffer the consequences. Some doctors may also use large amounts of Botox on the assumption that if a little Botox is good, then more must be better. Too much Botox in your system can lead to respiratory difficulties and cardiac arrest as the toxin paralyzes the muscles of the heart and lungs. This can quickly lead to death if left untreated.

Also, the long-term effects of Botox on patients have not been properly studied, as the drug has not been in use long enough for all the long-term effects to become known. It is, however, likely that Botox will have some long-term negative effects as it is based on a toxin that is very dangerous to the human body.

While Botox treatments may be very effective at treating wrinkles, you should not be tempted by instant results and choose instead to use treatments that provide slower, but more long-lasting results and have been proved to be safe for your personal use.

A Cellulite Massager Can Be Effective For Cellulite Reduction

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 11:42 am

About 90% of women face the problem of cellulite in the region of the hips, thighs and buttocks. Though often found in obese women, it does not spare lean women. Cellulite is not a life threatening condition despite this there is great concern among women to get rid of it. Millions of dollars are spent over the different methods of therapy for cellulite removal.

There has always been the demand for the ultimate cellulite therapy which is easy, cheap, and safe and has lasting effects. Till date, science has not come up with an option giving all the above benefits. Nonetheless the searches continue and as newer methods are being evaluated. The preferred methods are those which are noninvasive and with ease of use. A cellulite massager is a recent advancement in the therapy for cellulite. This technique is noninvasive and convenient to use and shows effects within weeks of starting treatment.

Before we know how the cellulite massager acts to reduce cellulite, let’s see how cellulite is formed. Cellulite mainly consists of fat deposited in the subcutaneous tissue. The strands of connective tissue that run deep down from the skin to the muscle planes keep the skin in place. As the fat continues to occupy space it bulges the skin out and makes the surface of the affected area irregular and dimpled, what is called as cellulite. Other factors like improper drainage of lymph and blood circulation lead to accumulation of water giving it a puffy appearance.

How does the cellulite massager work?

Massage has been a type of relaxation therapy since ancient times. A firm massage improves the circulation of blood and lymph. It also removes dead skin cells and improves the appearance of the skin. A good massage generates heat in the local area which is conducted through the skin to the subcutaneous tissue. This helps in the mobilization of the fat depots which form the cellulite.

The massage therapy is often coupled with vacuum therapy to potentiate the beneficial effects in reducing cellulite. One such method is called Endemologie which uses vacuum with rollers on the equipment giving a massage like effect. The vacuum aids by stretching the skin and connective tissue strands. This causes the skin to appear smooth and dimple free. This form of therapy is sometimes also combined with the use of heat energy like radiofrequency waves and infra red rays to have combined benefits of heat and massage. One such instrument that combines the different methods to bring about cellulite reduction is the Vela Smooth.

It should be noted that massage though convenient and effective , it only improves the appearance of the skin and does not really cause loss of the fat .Hence its effects are temporary and the procedure needs to be repeated often. Massage therapy when combined with other methods like regular exercise and proper diet is likely to give a more lasting effect. Avoidance of smoking, caffeinated drinks and alcoholic beverages also help to make the effects long lasting.

Great Tips Towards Stretch Mark Removal

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 11:30 am

It is a very common hears say that stretch marks are marks for ever on your skin. They are the permanent mark on the skin highlighting that you are a mother of a kid or many children. I will say it is a misnomer to use the term permanent marks because for me they hardly almost stayed not for more than a couple of years. I used the following techniques to erase those Honour badges from my skin. Truly, they worked out for me. In addition to these I have also mentioned various other effective tips that my mommy used to do for her self and from what she had learnt from her close knit friends.

These tips are in expensive and can be followed by all for effective treatment for skin stretch marks. Try Shea butter. It is one of the very famous ingredients for minimising the stretch marks. It is a great moisturiser and evidently softens the skin. Try applying this on the areas prone to stretch marks. Upon continuous usage, you are sure to find a skin that is free of any marks.

Another common tip that my mom uses on me is the oil mixture treatment. In this, you mix half cup of extra virgin olive oil with half a cup of aloe vera gel with 10 vitamin E capsules and 5 vitamin A capsules. This oil mixture can be stored in the refrigerator. Before and after the bath try massaging the skin with this oil mixture and you can witness a grand cure upon consistent usage.

Try using Emu oil it is available cheaply in many stores. The advantage of using Emu oil is that it is useful for curing any other scars also which are marring the skin texture and appearance. They have a tendency to deeply penetrate the skin very fastly and cures the marks from the inside layers of the skin. The cure is from inside towards outside.

Another common method to erase stretch mark is to apply baby oil over the skin lavishly. Try applying it over the skin immediately after bath while the skin is still wet. This can drastically help to not only moisturise the skin but also helps for better absorption since the skin is wet. Pat or dampen a cloth with water while giving the skin hot and cold treatments alternatively. This is mainly effective for the stomach regions since these areas are very sensitive to hot and cold fluctuations.

Not to forget the miraculous cocoa butter. They have and are still doing many wonders for the stretch mark treatments. Cocoa butter when massaged over the skin deeply penetrates in to various layers of the skin thus curing the scars caused by the stretching of the skin.

In contrast to these tips, one of my aunts, is keenly interested in not using any of these tips and argues strongly that the stretch marks are caused only due to hormonal changes in the body and not due to the stretching of the skin tissues. She also challenges that these marks can vanish right away in due course with out any kind of additional care taken for removing them. Time has to answer if these marks can vanish in a due course.

The most effective essential oil that is being used more universally is the tea tree oils. This oil when applied over the infected area at least thrice daily can help to minimise the attack. However the results can not be seen over night. Prolonged treatment is essential for a permanent cure. Upon a long term application of the oil, initially, the discolouration of the nails disappears and then the infection. Care has to be taken to put the oil in he nail bed also when the infection is severe. In contrast to the ointments. The essential oil can reach the infected area very easily and the absorbing power is excellent.

Oregano oil has also been rated as one of the top oils for curing the infection. Initially just a topical administration of the oil is sufficient. But when the infection persists still for a longer time, they can be taken in orally for a quicker remedy. The oil has to be taken in frequently till the disappearance of the infection. However, this has to be done only under the medical supervision to avoid any kind of risks associated with allergic reactions to the oil.

Have You Considered Laser Resurfacing?

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 9:33 am

If you have decided that it is, time to move further then just creams and at home treatments, for your anti-aging skin care needs, than laser resurfacing would be a great option for you. Laser skin care treatments are becoming more and more popular among the middle aged group. Laser treatments are safe, completely effective, and when put up against other skin treatments is considerable cheaper.

Laser resurfacing, is one method of removing fine lines and wrinkles from a person’s skin, in order to give them back their young, glowing skin. When you go to your skin care specialist they will use the laser to remove the damaged skin layer by layer, until all the damaged skin is removed and all that is left is smooth unwrinkled skin. When the procedure is done, your skin will look like it did before it was damaged by the sun and other elements.

If you have discolored skin, acne scars, wrinkled or sun damaged skin than you are the perfect candid for laser resurfacing skin care treatment. Laser resurfacing, while it is not as expensive, can carry a good size price tag, the cost is determined by how much of your skin’s surface needs to be done. While this treatment has wonderful effects, you have to be realistic and realize that this is not something as appearance altering as a face lift.

Remember before you decide that you are going to have this procedure, it is important to remember that just like any other procedure that laser resurfacing has risks that are associated with it. There are risks of scarring from the laser itself, permanent skin discoloration is also a possibility, along with infection. Other than cream care, that you do at home, most skin treatments carry the same risks.

Along with the potential risks, you should expect to have a little discomfort, and a light amount of swelling, remember not to panic if your are sore for a couple of days. Make sure that you have an ice pack ready at home that will help to reduce swelling. The doctor will give you pain medicine after the procedure, this will help to keep you comfortable at home.

Just like the price depends on why type of laser resurfacing you have, so does the recover, keep in mind that your age and your general health will play key factors also. If the procedure is small a few days and you can continue on with your normal activities, however, if the procedure is complicated than you can look forward to up to four weeks recovery time. Once that your recovery time is over, you should be great with a tighter more youthful appearance, every time you look in the mirror.

The Diamond Engagement Ring: Is It The Real Thing?

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 4:22 am

Buying an engagement ring is a wonderful venture, for both the man proposing and the woman receiving it. However, some hesitation may arise, not due to the proposal but because of the engagement ring. Some may wonder if the diamond engagement ring which they are giving or receiving is the real thing. There are a few surefire ways to tell if the lovely engagement ring is a real one or a fake.

Obtain an Independent Appraisal

The best way to determine if your diamond is genuine and not a cubic zirconia or other similar look alike is to have it appraised via an independent appraisal. This means that you should go elsewhere outside of the jeweler who has sold you or is selling you the stone (most of the time it is the former situation as most jewelers will not allow you to take merchandise from the store unless you have purchased it). An independent appraiser will investigate various characteristics of the stone to ascertain whether the diamond you have is what you thought it was.

Other Ways to Ascertain the Genuineness of a Diamond Engagement Ring

For those who do not want to spend the money on having their diamond engagement ring appraised by an independent jewelry appraiser, there are some quick tricks you can try at home which may help you to conclude if your ring is real or not. Keep in mind that these are in no way as good as an appraisal but may help to ease your mind a bit.

One at home test which may help you to determine if your diamond engagement ring is real or a fake is the diamond scratch test. However, NEVER use this test; it can be destructive to the diamond. Diamonds will scratch glass, however some other materials do also which could present a problem as to the authenticity of the test. This test is often tried but NEVER advised.

Another test which engagement ring owners can try at home and will be less likely to damage the ring such as with the diamond scratch test is the fogging test. Breathe on your ring and try to make it fog up. If it does and remains that way for a few seconds, the ring may be a simulated diamond. However, if the diamond does not maintain a fog-like appearance then the stone may be real. Again, as with any at home test, the results are not foolproof and you may get false results. With that said, it is sometimes good evidence to add to your arsenal regarding the genuineness of the diamond.

No matter what test you choose to perform, there is still no better way to tell the genuineness of a diamond than by way of an appraisal performed by a reputable gemologist/appraiser.

Popular Eternity Ring Occasions

Wednesday 31 December 2008 @ 1:07 am

We can comfortably state that eternity rings have been a popular ritual in many parts of the world for a long time. For centuries, people have exchanged rings as a symbol of relationship and special bonding, whether through friends, lovers, relatives and associates.

The Egyptians actually practiced ring exchange and were some of the first people to make and wear them. A ring is usually comprised of a continuous circle of metal embedded with either important writing or a precious stone. Rings have always symbolised love and friendship.

No much has changed since rings first appeared on the scene in human history The circular appearance unbroken circle actually symbolises the inseparable nature of the newly forged friendship or relationship.

Rings are still used today are more or less the same reasons that they were used earlier on in history. One of the reasons why eternity rings were given was friendship. While boys can be said to also exchange rings for one reasons or other, exchanging rings is really something that is done mostly by women.

But men to give rings to women and this is a very common practice especially where one is engaged to be married. Girls are also fond of exchanging rings especially after the end of a school period and they are graduating. This is because most good friends will usually be separating.

During an engagement to be married, rings are also exchanged and this is a very common practice worldwide. An engagement is one of the most memorable moments of one’s life. This is because an engagement usually precedes a marriage. To many, the wedding day is as magical as it is sentimental.

Men spend hundreds of dollars on the best rings for the woman that they will marry. It is not the practice of women to give rings to men during engagement but they do buy rings for their grooms during the actual wedding.

Rings are also exchange during, you guessed it, weddings. During this time, both the man and the woman exchange eternity rings which may range from tens of dollars to sometimes millions depending on who is involved in the wedding. It is true the heart is what matters and there is no right or wrong material for an eternity ring.

But while this is true, people continue to insist that their rings come in gold, diamond, silver, bronze, ivory and even precious rubies. Even people with low incomes stretch themselves to purchase wedding rings worth hundreds if not thousands of dollars. This is because of the belief that the more expensive the ring, the more it symbolises closeness.

Parents and children also exchange rings especially when one of them is leaving. This can be to a war, another job, to be married, on a extended business trip and the like. Children also give rings to their parents for the same reasons.

This is because both parties want to be remembered and to remember the other even they are apart and hence the eternity rings

Questions That Patients Having Acne Treated Should Ask a Cosmetic Dermatologist

Tuesday 30 December 2008 @ 10:18 pm

Most people end up with at least a couple of annoying pimples at least once in their life. Those who do not are indeed extraordinarily lucky. When those bad pimples occur, it does not matter what age a person is, they try their best to get rid of them. It gets especially annoying for those who are in a profession where they constantly need to be photographed. Yes, the photographs can be digitally edited, but that costs a lot of money that production companies would rather spend in other places.

That being said, no matter what background a person’s profession is, a cosmetic dermatologist should be able to help get rid of those pimples and restore the skin to a healthy, smooth texture. What is the difference between a cosmetic dermatologist and a regular dermatologist, anyway? The difference lies in their approaches to various skin conditions such as acne. A dermatologist will try topical medications, but a cosmetic dermatologist specializes in different kinds of treatment procedures that are designed to make the skin as flawless looking as possible faster than regular skin medications.

Once a person has decided that they are ready for the various treatments that this kind of dermatologist can provide, it is very important that the do their research as to the various credentials that the dermatologist should have. In fact, patients should be able to schedule a consultation with the dermatologist, wherein they should ask questions about his or her certifications, as well as the verifiable testimonials that he or she has.

Upon answering all of those questions, the cosmetic dermatologist will then discuss the kinds of things that can be done to repair the look of the person’s skin. Laser technology has been incorporated into many of the current facial procedures. Thus, in the case of acne, one of the things that could be done is blue light acne treatment. In such a scenario, the laser light stimulates the blood flow in the face, which in turn stimulates the growth of new tissue.

There are various dermatological procedures that treat things other than acne as well. Take, for example, the irregular skin pigmentation that can be caused by too much exposure to the sun. People who love to be out in the sun in order to get a suntan really need to reconsider doing so, because ultraviolet rays are very damaging to the skin. In an effort to protect itself, the skin produces excess amounts of melanin, which results in the pigmentation discrepancies. In some people, skin cancer can also be a result of too much sun exposure.

Fractional resurfacing is one way to exfoliate skin as well. Fraxel is one brand name procedure offered which performs fractional resurfacing. When skin is exposed to the sun for too long, not only is the topmost layer of the skin damaged, but the damage is done to the deeper layers as well. Fraxel penetrates these layers using, once again, laser technology to restore the skin tissue. Microdermabrasion is another option as well, as it helps to remove unevenly toned skin and damaged skin at the surface. Lastly, it is important to note that the kinds of procedures available to a patient will vary in accordance with their respective skin conditions.
