What Kinds of Procedures Are Included Within the Field of Cosmetic Dermatology?

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 3:10 pm

When a woman goes to her local mall, what kinds of stores are there? Clothing stores most definitely, punctuated by a food pavilion and some other stores selling accessories. However, something that is especially fun to peruse are the cosmetics and body care stores. The presence of these kinds of stores just goes to show how important it is for women to take care of their skin.

Although these kinds of stores sell many kinds of products that a woman might find helpful, there are some skin problems that might benefit more from the various kinds of procedures that are available within the field of cosmetic dermatology. What exactly is cosmetic dermatology? It is a field that provides elective procedures to improve the appearance of the skin.

Something that many women want to get rid of is fine lines and wrinkles. Although both of these things are natural signs of aging, they can also be caused prematurely by sun exposure, as well as smoking. Anatomically speaking, fine lines and wrinkles happen because of a depletion in the natural Hyaluronic acid that the body produces.

So, the field of cosmetic dermatology includes various dermal injections that are designed to replenish the lack of Hyaluronic acid. One example of a procedure that does this is Radiesse. These injections are meant to last for anywhere from six months to a year, after which time the patient can decide to have the procedure done again to maintain their results.

However, cosmetic dermatology is not just designed to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Another procedure that is offered within this field is a facial chemical peel. This procedure is often done to treat problems such as acne, whether it is the actual pimples or the scars that occur because of them. In this procedure, a chemical solution is applied to the skin to dissolve the upper epidermal layers, thus gradually revealing healthy skin layers underneath.

As skin ages, it is commonplace to see irregular pigmentation occur. Again, while aging can play a significant factor in this skin irregularity, a main source of irregular pigmentation is sun exposure. Yes, it might be fun to lie out in the sun and get a tan that people think will give them a healthy glow, but instead it just makes the person more at risk for serious skin problems such as skin cancer.

How is sun exposure the main cause of hyperpigmentation? The sun emits dangerous ultraviolet rays, which stimulate the production of melanin in the skin. Melanin is a skin pigment that the skin manufactures in order to protect itself. However, the more sun exposure the person gets, the more distorted the pigmentation becomes.

People who find themselves in this situation have a couple of choices when it comes to cosmetic procedures. One option is to have the pigmentation eradicated through laser therapy. Another option is to have a bleaching cream applied. Whatever procedure is chosen, it is important that a prospective patient find the right dermatologist, with whom he or she can discuss all applicable procedures.

Laser Liposuction: What is it All About?

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 2:49 pm

Obesity is something that has remained unchanged for thousands of years in that both men and women suffer from it. What has changed is the overall amount of people who are carrying around excess weight. Originally, the only people who were overweight were those who had enough money to buy excess amounts of food. Nowadays, there are a lot of people who are overweight, and that is mainly because unhealthy food is readily available at low prices, and they are not diligent about exercising.

For those who want to get rid of some extra weight, they might have the option of getting laser liposuction. In order to understand how laser liposuction works, it is first important for any prospective patient to have an understanding as to who is, and who is not, a good candidate for this kind of procedure. The ideal candidate will be someone who is already at a healthy weight, and has some fat that has accumulated that has been unable to become depleted through diet and exercise.

People who are very overweight might think that they can get laser liposuction as a way of getting rid of their excess fat without having to diet or exercise. This is completely untrue, and an obese person who tries to have this kind of surgery done will be told by the surgeon that before he or she can become an ideal candidate, they will have to eat a healthy diet as well as exercise for at least a year.

So, how does the laser liposuction procedure itself work? Small incisions are made in the problematic area, and then the laser itself is directed at the layer of fat. The heat of the laser ruptures the fat molecules that have accumulated over time because of unprocessed fat. These ruptured fat molecules then become liquid, which is sucked out.

People who are thinking about having this procedure done are probably curious to find out the bodily areas in which the procedure can be done. All areas of the torso, as well as the upper arms and the upper thighs, are able to be treated via this procedure. However, once the right surgeon for the procedure has been chosen, the areas that will be most effectively treated will be determined during a consultation appointment.

During the consultation, the patient will be informed as to how he or she will need to effectively prepare for the procedure itself. First of all, if the patient is a smoker, he or she will need to stop smoking as soon as possible in order to avoid surgical complications. Also, the patient will be instructed to stop taking anti inflammatory medication.

After the procedure, the patient will need to recuperate for a couple of weeks, while at the same time sticking to a healthier diet. This is especially important, because otherwise, there is a considerable chance that the fat can come back. Results will start to become visible immediately after the procedure, however, optimal results will not be seen for a couple of months.

Re-Establish a Youthful Looking Breast

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 2:30 pm

When performing breast augmentation by itself, it takes great skill to place an implant correctly and achieve wonderful results. Similarly, it takes great skill to appropriately carry out a breast lift procedure by itself and re-establish a youthful looking breast. However, both of these operations have certain, relatively low levels of unpredictability when they are carried out by themselves. Unpredictability in plastic surgery originates from multiple factors, such as, individual wound healing factors, age, hormones and techniques used.

When breast lifts are combined with implant placement the variables that contribute to unpredictability are multiplied several fold. Increased unpredictability sometimes makes it more difficult to achieve good results. The experienced surgeon can still be successful by using proven techniques that reduce the amount of unpredictability.

Patients who wish to have a breast lift with implants performed together should understand that carrying out this combination of operations is more of a challenge and requires a tremendous amount of skill and experience, on the part of the surgeon, to achieve the best results. Most patients can have these procedures performed together as long as the anatomy, level of sagginess and tissue conditions favor a good outcome.

In certain cases, when the level of sagginess and tissue conditions are not favorable, your surgeon may recommend against using the combination of breast lift and implant during the same operation. Instead, they usually carry out placement of the implant first to give the tissues a chance to settle and improve. After 6 to 12 weeks, once tissues have settled, the second stage of the procedure (the lift) is carried out with greater predictability.

While it is a disadvantage to have the procedure performed in two stages, the advantage is the ability to achieve much better results in patients who would otherwise have poor results with a one stage procedure. Patients who are likely to need two separate stages include those with severe sagginess, thin tissues, capsular contracture, sub-glandular implants, breast scars and those who already had a breast lift in the past.

The vertical breast lift technique is ideally suited for saggy breasts that are wide and have a nipple that requires greater than 6 centimeters of lift. The vertical incision is made along with a periareolar incision. The breast gland can be reshaped and lifted through these incisions with or without the use of implants. With a vertical breast lift, the nipple can be lifted 6 to 10 centimeters. The wide breast skin is removed and the breast is molded into a more beautiful shape.

Skin closure is made without creating a lot of tension. When there is little skin tension, there is usually great healing and, in most cases, the incisions begin to fade soon after surgery. The vertical incision technique can be used in patients who previously would have required a wise pattern or lollipop incision and is considered to be a state-of-the-art, minimal incision alternative to more extensive procedures.

This breast lift technique is reserved for breasts that have both vertical and horizontal skin excess and demonstrate great sagginess. It is the most extensive form of breast lift technique used by plastic surgeons, but can produce very predictable results. Nipple elevation can be accomplished nicely while achieving a great breast shape through this incision. Ultimately, incisions end up in the breast crease, around the areola and vertically in the front of the breasts. These incisions fade nicely with time. Women who need the Wise Pattern breast lift technique should not be disappointed when their surgeon recommends this procedure. The Wise Pattern incision is recommended in patients who will benefit the most from this form of breast lift technique.

Body Contouring Can Return A Part That Has Faded

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 2:27 pm

Your plastic surgeon will help you put your life back together when an accident, trauma, or medical condition takes it apart. He or she will work with you to rebuild and repair what was lost. This will raise your spirit as well.

Perhaps you sense a part of you has faded. Maybe you feel you don’t have the same vigor as before. Plastic surgeons are there to help you recover that part of you which makes you feel complete. He or she provides the latest techniques in aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. All plastic surgeons listen first, understand second, and then act. They’re committed to making you feel new and rejuvenated so you can live the way you’ve always wanted. Plastic surgeons are there to help you recover and mend. Their mission is to revitalize or reconstruct your appearance, and in turn, help you rediscover your confidence and self-esteem.

Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed procedures. Localized fat pockets, resistant to exercise and diet, can be eliminated. The areas of the body of such accumulated fat pockets often include the hips, thighs, abdomen, neck , arms, and breasts. The best candidates are near normal weight people with elastic skin who desire an improved contour change. This procedure is usually performed under general or local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The incisions are placed in specific areas to provide the optimal contouring and aesthetic result. A fitted compression garment will be worn for about 3 to 4 weeks. Activity may be resumed in about 3 weeks and the final results will be apparent in about 3 months.

The tummy tuck is also know as an abdominoplasty. It is a procedure for people who have loose skin and fat folds of the abdomen from pregnancy or weight loss, stretch marks, or laxity in abdominal wall who want a flatter and firmer abdomen with an improved contour. Liposuction may be used in combination for added contouring benefits. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and often requires an overnight hospital stay. The scar will vary based on body shape and extends from the lower abdomen to as far as the lower back. Mini abdominoplasties are reserved for a select group of patients. You will be encouraged to walk and move regularly almost immediately. However, physical activity should be limited during the first 10 days. Strenuous activity will be avoided for about 6 weeks.

How To Smell Good To Your Partner

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 2:25 pm

So, what do you think? Are you attracted or repelled to someone based on how they smell, and if so, to what extent?

We’re all either positively or negatively affected by smell. Problem is, we’re affected in different ways. Let me explain.

A study done by scientists from Northwestern University’s School of Medicine reported that imperceptible levels of scents affect our judgment in unconscious way. The scientists used three scents at different levels of concentration, from imperceptible to perceptible. The scents were: lemon (good), sweat (bad) and ethereal (neutral).

After participants sniffed a sample, they were shown a photo of a human face with a neutral expression and asked to rate the person’s likeability. Here’s what happened.

When the scent was perceptible to the participants, they were able to discount the odor and evaluate just the face. However, when the odor was barely perceptible, their judgments about likeability were biased by the odor. What does that mean?

Your body is giving off an odor and people are quickly and unconsciously taking that piece of information into account when deciding if they like you or not. That may sound unfair, but like many of the laws of likeability, it is what it is. You either smell good to someone or you don’t.

Now comes the real problem. Different people find the same scent both attractive and unattractive. For example, my neighbor has a night blooming jasmine plant in his yard that puts off an odor every evening after the sun goes down. Both my wife and I love the smell. It reminds me of a fragrant sugary candy that I used to enjoy as a child known as candy buttons. However, there are people who find the smell offensive.

We use an organic by-product of the neem tree to fertilize our haliconias. Both of my sons and I find the smell intolerable, where my wife and her female friends find it virtually odorless. Based on this experiment alone, I am persuaded that different smells cause different reactions in different people.

Another study by Claud Wedekind, a biologist at the University of Lausanne, had 44 men wear a t-shirt for two nights. The t-shirts where then sniffed by 49 women and rated for levels of attractiveness.

A higher percentage of the women preferred the odor of the t-shirts worn by men who were immunologically different to them. However, women who were on birth control pills showed preference for men with similar (MHC) or Major Histocompatibility Complex profiles to their own. Immunologically speaking, your smell will either attract or repel a potential mate.

The point once again is this, different people are attracted to different odors. So how can you use this knowledge to make yourself likeable?

To start, understand that how you smell does matter. No one likes to smell someone who generates a bad odor. Basic hygiene is a good start. Take a shower, watch what you eat, brush your teeth, use deodorant and wear clean clothes. These tasks will hide a bad odor, but how do you generate a good, attractive, likable odor?

This is where you need to take a risk and ask your partner when they find your smell most attractive. Allow them to pick out your shampoo, soap, perfume, cologne, deodorant etc. Ask them to tell you when you don’t smell good and why.

Follow these simple suggestions and you will be well on your way to a happier, healthier more rewarding life.

A Chin Implant Can Produce a Dramatic Improvement in Facial Profile and Balance

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 1:31 pm

In plastic surgery, cheek implants may be used concurrently with other facial rejuvenation or enhancement techniques such as facelift or rhinoplasty, or as a stand alone procedure to produce a desirable aesthetic change which is augmentation or enhancement of the cheek region. High cheek bones (malar bones) can be a desirable trait that not all of us are born with. Furthermore, as part of the aging process, we tend to lose the youthful fullness underneath the cheeks, which can impart a “hollowed” look to the face (this area beneath the cheeks is called the submalar space).

For men, cheek implants placed over the malar bones can create a more masculine, assertive appearance, whereas in women cheek implants can change a long, oval shaped face to a more attractive heart shape. Similarly, submalar implants are used in men and women to fill the concavity or hollowness below the cheeks (called the submalar space), creating a more youthful and energetic appearance.

Cheek implants are inserted through small incisions on the inside of the upper lip, which heal in approximately one week. A relatively minor procedure, cheek implants may be placed using only local anesthesia or with deeper sedation for patient comfort. Most implants are constructed from solid silicone, which adheres to the underlying bone and is very difficult to feel.

While rare, complications may include infection or displacement of the implant requiring removal or repositioning. Over the years the art and science of facial contouring with cheek implants has evolved significantly, and there are many different styles and shapes to choose from. A successful outcome requires choosing the right size and shape of implant, and then placing that implant in the right location.

A small or weak chin, like a disproportionate nose, can affect the overall harmony of a face. Whether done at the time of nasal surgery or facelift surgery, or as a separate procedure, a chin implant can produce a dramatic improvement in facial profile and balance. The implant is inserted generally through a small incision beneath the chin. Plastic surgeons commonly use silastic anatomic shaped chin implants, which produce a very natural look and feel. Occasionally, mersilene mesh style chin implants, which allow ingrowth of our own tissue, are custom made for specific patients.

The implant is placed over the bone of the lower mandible, along the border of the chin in a precise pocket. It is then secured in a central position with temporary suture. The procedure can usually be done with local or intravenous anesthesia, and patients are able to return home immediately following chin implant surgery. The chin may be taped for several days to decrease swelling. Pain is generally minimal, and most patients return to work within several days to one week.

Side effects include mild swelling and numbness around the chin which is temporary. The rate of long term complications with a chin implant, such as infection or malposition, is extremely low and patients report very high long- term satisfaction with this relatively minor procedure.

Breast Augmentation New Clothes, New Confidence, New Men

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 1:28 pm

Women who desire larger breasts may wish to have a breast enlargement (augmentation) procedure. Breast augmentation may also be indicated for women who have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other.

Breast augmentation is intended to give the patient larger and more shapely breasts. A more positive self image may also be a result of breast enlargement.

Breast enlargement is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made under the breast or armpit and a saline or silicone implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle.

The patient goes home in an elastic bra. The bra helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks.

Breast enlargement is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.

The specific risks and the suitability of breast augmentation for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

You may be a candidate for this procedure if you have sagging breasts due to past pregnancies, genetics, or aging. You may also desire a mastopexy if breast sagging is too great to be treated with an implant alone.

The procedure may also be helpful if your nipple-areolar complexes (pigmented areas around nipples) are enlarged. The procedure is intended to give the patient an elevated, more youthful breast contour, as well as nipple-areolar complexes of the desired size and at the correct height.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The patient goes home with only light dressings over the incision lines. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days.

Breast lift is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of mastopexy for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation.

All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Providing a professional, state of the art plastic surgery experience starts with a friendly and informed staff and surgeon that will schedule your pre-operative complimentary consultation. For any additional questions, meet and discuss the procedure with you plastic surgeon.

Give Your Skin A Papering Experience

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 11:44 am

Looking for a way to revitalize your skin. Many doctors have new techniques to rejuvenate the skin. Such procedures include Laser Resurfacing, Restylane, Botox Cosmetic Injections, and Obagi.

Many procedures penetrates below the surface of the skin to stimulate proper cell renewal, improving circulation and helping restore your skins natural moisture.

One procedure is called Obagi Nu-Derm (Blue Peel) when used properly under your physician’s supervision, will help your skin enjoy all these benefits. Diminish fine lines and wrinkle Smoother skin, Reduce pore size, Improve elasticity, A lovely, even skin tone, Bring oil production to normal levels, Reduce age spots and hyperpigmentation, Increase natural moisture, Desist environmental effects.

The Blue Peel can restore tighter, smoother and younger-looking skin regardless of age, color or skin type, not only to the face but also to non-facial areas, restoring healthier and more beautiful skin.

A mixture of trichloroacetic acid and blue base is applied to the skin in a series of layers. There is a mild to moderate burning sensation for a few minutes and some individuals may require some mild sedation for comfort. The skin will feel tight and a bluish tint will remain on your skin, which usually washes off in a couple of days.

There will be mild swelling and the face will begin peeling in a few days. The entire peel process takes between five and ten days, depending on the depth of the peel.

You can resume most of your normal activities but you must avoid the sun and cannot cover or remove the peeling skin, so you may want to avoid being seen for several days.

Your skin will look refreshed and may be slightly pink with a healthy glow. It will feel very smooth, pores will appear smaller and fine lines will be dramatically improved, while blotchy brown spots and irregular pigmentation will be gone.

Mother’s Mark Is A Sign Of Youth

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 11:20 am

A large number of birthmarks, not only increases the risk of falling ill from melanoma (malignant tumor of melanocytes which are found predominantly in skin), but also points to the biological youth of the organism. The more mother’s marks, the more the body is younger of its years, have found experts of King’s College London.

British scientists have found that truism “The more mother’s marks a person has, the worse” not so clear. Indeed, the higher number of freckles means that a person has an increased risk of skin cancer. However, doctors discovered another interesting connection: the more mother’s marks a person has, the less it is prone to aging.

The opening has been made by the staff of London King’s College led by Dr. Veronica Bateyl. Discovered 1800 twins (the location and number of mother’s marks of the twins are not identical), experts studied each of them not only the number of birthmarks on the body, but the length of telomeres – the specialized DNA-protein structures located at the ends of linear chromosomes.

The length of telomeres is linked to aging. When dividing cells, telomeres are not fully replicated and eventually shortened.

British Studies have shown that those people who have more mother’s marks have longer telomeres. The human form the same pair of twins with more than 100 birthmarks, had longer telomeres than his twin brother, who had less than 25 birthmarks. This difference in telomeres length equated to six or seven years difference in age.

The work has been published in the journal “Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention”.

To say that those with more mother’s marks, just lucky, you can not – have long been proven that the more birthmarks, the higher the chance to get such a bad disease, like melanoma. But now it can be argued that a large number of birthmarks indicate a low probability of dying from cardiovascular disease.

For example, Dr. Richard Kouton from the University of Utah tied a short length of the telomeres with a threefold increasing in mortality from cardiovascular disease. And people with the shorter telomeres died eight times more frequently than others. There was also a link between short telomere length and mortality from cancer and stroke, but in this case, the statistical reliability has not been proved – the quantity of the material was little.

On the possible causes of the phenomenon, scientists have not yet reported. They intend to continue studies to confirm the data on the new material.

Discovering The Average Cost Of Cosmetic Surgery

Friday 27 February 2009 @ 10:38 am

Cosmetic surgery is literally changing the face of people all around the world. With its quick fix ideology and the way in which it can boost confidence in many people by attaching new parts to old faces, cosmetic surgery is becoming popular among sets of all people in all walks of life. Stories abound of people getting a tummy tuck or a butt lift on a weekday at lunch, but many people still do not know too much about the average cost of cosmetic surgery and what it can mean to your pocket book. Finding out the average cost of cosmetic surgery is a matter of checking with a few regional surgeons for their price lists.

There are a lot of variables that could affect the average cost of cosmetic surgery. It all depends, for the most part, on the type of doctor you use and their expertise. Beyond the actual surgical procedure you will have performed, you will need to find a great doctor that you can trust with adding plastic parts to your body and enhancing parts that are already there by either adding size or reducing size. With this type of medical procedure, you need to be careful that you are trusting your body and the outcome of the surgery to a professional. Do your homework and make sure that you know what you are getting in to.

Some Specific Costs

Beyond picking the best doctor you can find, tabulating the average cost of cosmetic surgery also comes down to the procedure you will have done. If you are interested in Botox injections, for example, you will be looking at about a four hundred dollar bill for the most part. This is because the Botox injections can be completed without a lot of fuss and you can be in and out on the same day. The after-care for the physician is virtually non-existent, so the cost of the procedure is significantly less than something more major and more complicated for the doctor.

If you are a male or female looking for breast augmentation surgery, however, the average cost of cosmetic surgery alters and becomes a lot higher than the Botox injections. You could be looking at a bill of about four thousand dollars for a breast augmentation surgery and then about half of that cost (two thousand dollars on average) to have those same implants removed when you get tired of how you look.

Eddie Lamb publishes an abundance of information on a range of topical subjects. This article Discovering The Average Cost Of Cosmetic Surgery, is just one of a host of useful articles about Cosmetic Surgery listed on our site map at Cosmetic Surgery Revisited.
