Ok so I will be the first to say the world overall has become more casual than in years past. For me I am a jeans and t shirt guy if I could get away with wearing nothing but that I would. There are many occasions in life when dressing up not only fits the part but feels good as well.

There are all of the usual ones like funerals, weddings and work functions. What about a special evening out with your wife, a nice meal on the town deserves a jacket at least, no? I can remember a time when wearing a suit was part of normal business life and now it seems there are many guys working especially in silicon valley that are VERY casual. I have to admit it suits me more (no pun intended) but I don’t mind dressing up.

When I was in my late teens I played hockey for a junior B team and everyone in the league like many of the pros do today dress up before a game. For those that don’t know I am not joking all of us hockey players would arrive to the rink wearing suits. I am talking ties, shoes, pants and jacket. Hockey is kind of a funny sport full of tradition. While many view it as nothing more than a bunch of guys beating each other up on skates there are a lot of ways the sport always shows respect. Unlike Football or Basketball where guys show up in fancy cars wearing street clothing and large gold necklaces Hockey players always show up on the same bus and are dressed respectably in proper suits.

So really as much as I enjoy jeans and a t shirt I have been wearing suits for more years than most of my friends and for the most part I don’t mind it at all. I guess whether you wear jeans or a suit to work what really matters is does it look thrown together or do you look like your actually care about your appearance. That to me is what really matters people looking like they care about their appearances, there is nothing worse than someone that looks sloppy.

At the end of the day we are all different and many of us only wear suits for special occasions. I think it is important to have at least one good suit in your closet. You never know when the next wedding is going to happen!
